How The Grade Curve Calculator Works

A curve adjusts the raw percentage before assigning a letter-grade estimate.

Start with raw percent

The raw grade is score earned divided by total points, multiplied by 100.

Apply curve method

The curve can add points, add percentage points, or scale all scores relative to the class high score.

Cap and grade

If the cap is enabled, scores above 100% are limited before mapping the curved percentage to a common letter-grade scale.

Grade Curve Calculator FAQ

Common questions about test curves, class-high scaling, and caps.

How does a grade curve calculator work?

It starts with the raw score percentage, applies the selected curve method, then converts the curved score back into points and a letter-grade estimate.

What does scaling the class high to 100% mean?

If the highest score was below the maximum, every score is scaled by the same ratio so that the class high becomes a perfect score.

Should curved grades be capped at 100%?

Many classes cap curved grades at the maximum score, but some allow scores above 100% for extra credit. Use the policy from your teacher or syllabus.
