    Calculation Steps

      How to estimate video storage

Use export-style inputs first, then review the calculated bitrate and storage requirement before you render, upload, or archive.

      Start with the delivery target

Resolution, frame rate, codec, and quality are usually easier to know than raw bitrate. Choose the preset that matches the export or camera setting you expect to use.

      Codec choice changes storage

AV1, HEVC, and VP9 usually need less bitrate than H.264 for similar visual quality. ProRes options are much larger because they are editing and intermediate formats.

      Audio usually matters less

A single stereo track is small compared with most video streams, but surround audio, lossless audio, or multiple language tracks can still add meaningful storage.

      Video Size FAQ

Common questions about presets, bitrate estimates, codecs, and why actual exports vary.

Why does this use presets instead of asking for bitrate?

Most people know the export settings they plan to use, such as 4K, 60 fps, HEVC, or ProRes. The calculator turns those choices into an estimated bitrate and still shows the bitrate in the results.

Why are ProRes estimates so much larger?

ProRes is designed for editing and production workflows, not compact delivery. It preserves more image information and is intentionally much larger than typical streaming codecs.

Why can my exported file be different from the estimate?

Encoders use different settings, variable bitrate, scene complexity, color depth, metadata, and container overhead. Use the exact bitrate from your export tool when you need a final delivery number.
